TRADING CARD GENIE

Game Jam project

Done in a 2 week period in July of 2022

With a theme of “Open Sesame”, we decided to create a fun idle-styled game that’s a loving parody of trading card games and their various idiosyncrasies.

The biggest challenge was to figure out, especially during developing the UI, how to go about allowing the player to amass large quantities of cards at once; without making it so they become just “number get bigger”, and letting the humor of the cards be lost.

Our solution resulted in creating screens that indicate dupes when you’re buying thousands of cards at once, to show scope and scale, but only putting in dedicated effort to show brand new cards to the player. It was a wonderful UX challenge.

If I had to make this again, I’d focus more on the presentation, and ensuring that the list of different cards felt more meaningful. Adding more variations in the screen, perhaps background color/pattern depending on the rarity of the duplicates. And just, more cards so it takes longer than 10 minutes to beat!
